Watching for Baby Turtles During Turtle Season

Turtle season kicked off on May 1st and the city is up and ready to go. The Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring oversees where the sea turtles nest and the condition of the nests over the course of the season. Turtle watching is one of the most popular tourist attractions on Anna Maria Island.

Anna Maria Island beaches have a few scattered turtle nests, which are designated by a rope and signage. Eventually, little hatchlings will climb out and scurry over to the gulf. This is, of course, if they make it that far.

Sea turtles are under a steady threat and most of it has to do with us. We love to attract visitors to our Anna Maria Island vacation rentals with pools to see our sea turtles, but we treasure them and will go to great lengths to secure their standing.

On that note, in September 2018, a special event was created as a fundraiser for the non-profit organization, Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring. We love helping them to continue their tireless efforts in taking care of our sea life friends, especially the sea turtles!

2nd Annual Turtle Watch Wednesday

A Paradise and Hurricane Hanks are proud to announce the 2nd Annual Turtle Watch Wednesday. Two more local sponsors have jumped on board, The Sun Newspaper and J&J printing. Upon entering, the first 75 guests will be greeted with a free drink card hosted by A Paradise. Hurricane Hanks will offer a selection of ½ price appetizers. For every drink and food item sold, Hurricane Hanks will donate $1.

Expect to mingle with locals and our island visitors while enjoying local entertainment. There will be plenty of silent auction items donated by local businesses, a 50/50 raffle, and a special Turtle Watch Wednesday T-shirt has been created that will be for sale at $20 each. All proceeds go to help our underwater friends.

Last year’s event brought in over $3,000 and well over 300 hundred guests attended. This year the plan is to double in size and donations! So, mark your calendars and plan to come on out and support a good cause.

How to Respect the Sea Turtles

The sea turtles mean a lot to our community. We have helped promote special sea turtle protective measures to ensure the safety and survival of our precious reptile friends. In tireless collaboration with Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch & Shorebird Monitoring, efforts have been made to promote positive and protective messages. We ask that guests respect the sea turtles place on our beaches. This includes:

  • Keeping outdoor night lights at a minimum. Sea turtles are attracted ted by the light and may end up trekking in the wrong direction to the gulf.
  • Do not, under any circumstance, disturb the nests. Camera lights can awaken them, where they mean hatch prematurely.
  • Keep the Turtle Watch number in mind at 941-778-5638. If you see a turtle in distress, don’t touch it. Touching hatchlings is illegal. Instead, call the team.
  • If you see bad behavior, don’t hesitate to call. Too many people let it alone and it becomes acceptable behavior. If you see anything of the sort, note the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
  • Fill in holes that can trap unsuspecting hatchlings.
  • Avoid waste on the beaches. Not only is it bad for the community as a whole, but sea turtles can get caught up in it.
